It’s May and a third of the year is over. The first third of the year is about adjustment and getting into the new rhythm and energy of the current year. The second third, which we’ve just entered, is the ‘steering’ energy– the time where we steer our energies and intentions to the places and outcomes we want. This month’s message for us collectively is in the three quotes that precede this column. We would all do well to heed and base our actions on them.
Your message for May comes in the form of a quote. Write it down, print it out, and post it on the inside of your entrance doors, your bathroom mirror, your refrigerator door, and your desk top. These are all places you unconsciously focus on and whatever is posted in these spots, can powerfully remind and inspire us.
FOR ALL OF US:
“Practical prayer is harder on the soles of your shoes than on the knees of your trousers. Don’t just talk– take action!” Austin O’Malley
“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.” Edward Everett Hale
“I love you, my sister and brother, whoever you are– whether you worship in your church, kneel in your temple, or pray in your mosque. You and I are all children of one faith, for the diverse paths of religion are fingers of the loving hand of one Supreme Being, a hand extended to all, offering completeness of spirit to all, eager to receive all.” Khalil Gibran
THE EMPEROR (March 21 – April 20) “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…” Dr. Seuss
THE EMPRESS (April 21 – May 20) “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Security does not exist in nature, nor does humanity as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than exposure.” Helen Keller
THE LOVERS (May 21 – June 20) “Should is an ordinary, everyday word– except when it’s used to indicate an order that may not be refused. Then should becomes a finger waiving under the nose… ‘should’ users build prison cells for themselves. They’re so focused on what they should do, that they can’t think about what they can do, what they might do in the future.” Dr. Arthur Freedman and Rose Dewolf
THE CHARIOT (June 21 – July 20) “We do not truly serve the world if we give to others but neglect our own truth and our own needs. It’s only when our own needs are fully met that we can generously and whole-heartedly give of ourselves. It’s not selfish to look after ourselves– it’s essential!” Pearl S. Buck
THE SUN (July 21 – August 22) “The time is always right to do what is right.” Martin Luther King, Jr. and, “In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing. The worst thing you can do is nothing.” Theodore Roosevelt
THE HERMIT (August 23 – September 22) “There is nothing more notable in Socrates than that he found time, when he was an old man, to learn music and dancing, and thought it time well spent.” Michel de Montaigne and, “If not now, when? If not you, who?” Hillel the Elder
JUSTICE (September 23 – October 22) “Two people have been living in you all your life. One is the ego– garrulous, demanding, hysterical, calculating; the other is the hidden spiritual being, whose still voice of wisdom you have only rarely heard or attended to. Once you begin listening to that voice of wisdom, you will have uncovered in yourself your own wise guide.” Sogyal Rinpoche
THE MAGICIAN (October 23 – November 21) “Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.” Unknown
THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE (November 22 – December 21) “To dream anything you want to dream– that is the beauty of the human mind. To do anything you want to do– that is the strength of the human will. To trust yourself to test your limits– that is the courage to succeed.” Bernard Edmonds
THE WORLD (December 22 – January 19) “Remember always that you not only have the right to be an individual, you have an obligation to be one.” Eleanor Roosevelt
STAR (January 20 – February 19) “Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare.” Japanese Proverb
THE MOON (February 20 – March 20) “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” Dr. Seuss and, “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.” Henry David Thoreau
