“The Chute’s Not Opening”

temperenceA few years ago, a friend showed me photos taken of of her skydiving.  While looking at the photos, I was surprised, pleased and excited when this thought came to me, “If I ever go skydiving and the parachute doesn’t open, I hope I remain fully conscious and present.  This is something that’s probably only going to happen once and I don’t want to miss a thing.”

Three years later, I received a call from a friend who told me that my guides had given her a message for me.  I was told through her that it was time for me to leave Malibu.  I’d received similar messages before about traveling to or relocating to various parts of the world.  The messages, or ‘orders’ as I like to call them, came in a variety of ways—through meditation, a guidance session,  visiting a sacred site, a certain ‘knowing’ and as was this one—through a friend’s spiritual ‘meeting’ with my guides.

I loved Malibu and I loved my life there—I didn’t want to leave.  As my friend and I talked about it, I was seized with lump in my stomach, breath stopping, heart-palpitating terror.  I didn’t know where I was to go or what would happen to me.  I only knew that my friend, the messenger, had delivered a truthful message and I would have to follow orders.

After the phone call, I made my way, doubled over in terror, to my dressing area, which was across from the bathroom.  Earlier that evening, I’d turned off the bathroom light and closed the door, but now the bathroom door was open and the light was on and I found myself looking into the eyes of the woman who was staring at me from the bathroom mirror.  She was clear, direct and fearless as she returned my gaze and said, “Well, the chute’s not opening.  What are you going to do?”

Right then and there, I knew—I was going for it—fully conscious, present, eyes wide open.  And just like that—the terror was gone.  Over the next few weeks, as I dismantled my life, I experienced many feelings, among them—doubt, sadness, elation, excitement, wonder.  I felt fear, too—not the paralyzing terror I‘d experienced at the beginning—but the fear that comes with not knowing what’s next.

I also felt the exhilarating “wildness” of it.  I had embraced and embarked upon an adventure that only promised me this—that as long as I listened to and followed God’s instructions, I would walk through whatever fires presented themselves to me, defeat whatever monsters that tried to devour me and remove whatever obstacles that blocked my path.

And of course, befitting any epic adventure, there were fires, monsters and obstacles that had to be contended with.  There were also signs, miracles and sightings that I’d never have seen and been a part of if I’d panicked because the chute wasn’t opening.

That’s the abridged version of how I got to the place I now call home.  God was right, too.  Sending me here was one of the best things that ever happened to me.  It didn’t take me long to realize that I was here to reconnect with kindred spirits.  (If God had left it up to me—there’s no way I‘d have left the idyllic paradise of Malibu AND there was definitely no way I’d have left Malibu to move to a place where there was snow!)

Living and operating by faith and trust is hard at times and requires a lot of courage, but it’s oh so exhilarating, magical and rewarding!  I live a life that’s propelled by the energies of The Fool, The Tower and The Star—three of the most dynamic Tarot cards in the deck.  And living that way does, indeed, require the above mentioned faith, trust and courage.

When did you last heed the call of your inner compass?  When did you last grab onto The Fool as he stepped off into the great unknown, taking you to a new world of discovery and wonder?  When did you last meet yourself in the midst of truly living your life as you were meant to?

We live in interesting times.  We always have and we always will.  This is the moment you’ve been waiting for; now is the time—how will you respond to the invitation, “The chute’s not opening.  What are you going to do?”

Mercury Goes Direct—At Last!

temperenceYesterday, Mercury retrograde released us from its commanding backwards grip and lurched forward, dragging us with it.

Most Mercury retrograde periods operate like a somewhat recalcitrant mule, stubbornly pulling and pushing us in directions we don’t want to go. Slow and very annoying at times, but manageable with a little effort. This one felt more like a high strung, intelligent, vindictive stallion, plotting ways to distract us so that it could forcefully brush us up against trees, scrape our skin and dislodge us. It was an intense, emotional ride and there were countless number of times it felt like I had to hang on for dear life.

Mercury was in the sign Cancer during the entire 24 day Mercury retrograde period. Cancer’s domain rules foundations and what’s under the surface of all things emotional, familial and nurturing. When Mercury goes retrograde, it gives us, as one client put it—AFOG—Another F*****g Opportunity for Growth. When Mercury goes retrograde in Cancer, it gives us AFOG squared.

People and situations from the past, memories (some good, some bad), unfinished emotional business, past life flashbacks, gnarly epic dreams and more all showed up, demanding conscious attention. People and circumstances that I’d forgotten ever existed came up for review and what I hope is finally resolution. I did a lot of internal, emotional house cleaning (Cancer rules homes and the care of them).

Suppressed emotions that needed to be brought to the surface and consciously felt, dealt with and properly disposed of were key for me. I forgave and released a lot—other people, life, myself. This Mercury retrograde scraped the ‘skin’ off so much that was unconsciously and subconsciously buried. It was one of the most uncomfortable Mercury retrograde periods I’ve experienced in years. It was also one of the most rewarding, liberating Mercury retrogrades I’ve experienced.

And that’s just on the emotional level! Machinery and technology acted up, too. In the middle of an important writing task, with the deadline looming large, my keyboard decided to take a vacation! No matter what I did, it refused to function. I knew I had to do something and I knew that whatever I did would end in probable frustration of some kind. I quickly researched, tracked down, bought and drove miles to pick up a new (very expensive!) keyboard and mouse. Once home with my new purchase, before I could install it—yes, you guessed it—my keyboard decided it liked me after all and is now functioning!

You think I’d have learned by now, but, knowing better, last week I cleverly decided to purchase and download a book. A simple operation that should have taken a few minutes stretched into a seemingly endless number of phone calls over a span of days to the help center before the download was accomplished. I’m now way more familiar with the call center’s techs then I ever thought I’d be.

In the understatement of the year, I’m glad it’s over.

The Insightful Narcissist

temperenceNarcissist—that’s a word that’s been bandied about a lot lately.  Does anyone really know what a narcissist is—not just the definition, but what a narcissist truly is?

Most of our dictionaries define a narcissist as someone who thinks so highly of themselves that they are convinced that they are the center of the Universe; as someone who says, “Yes, it is all about me,” and means it.  Those same dictionaries state that this is an unhealthy state for anyone to be in.

A few years ago, a psychologist told me that there are nine stages of narcissism—from ‘0’—having absolutely no sense of self or self-worth to ‘9’—being so self-absorbed that no one else matters.  She went on to explain that the extreme stages 0 through 3 (“I’m not enough of anything”) and 7 through 9 (“I’m all there is”) are considered the unhealthiest on the scale while the middle stages—4, 5 and 6 are the healthiest or normal stages of narcissism.

That explanation made sense to me.  In life, there are extremes and where there are extremes there is always a middle ground—a place or point where the most neutral (and often, most natural) expression of an energy will be found.

The word narcissism comes from the ancient Greek tale of Narcissus, the boy who so loved his own reflection in a pond that that love led him to his destruction. In other words, Narcissus loved himself to such an extreme (and viewed the rest of the world as a mirror meant only to reflect his idea of beauty and perfection back to himself) that his lack of ‘self-reflection’ cost him dearly. (He was definitely a ‘9.’)

But, does self-admiration have to be disastrous?

We’re all narcissists, we all fit somewhere on that scale. (And if you don’t think that’s true, check out any social media sight. Only a narcissist would be convinced that everyone else wants to hear their opinion or see a photo of their breakfast.)  Most of us are more inclusive and insightful than the extreme stages, though. If we’re reasonably emotionally healthy, we fall somewhere on the scale at stages 4, 5 or 6. We want you to pay attention to us and we want to pay attention to you, as well.

Insightful is defined as: the act of ‘getting’ or apprehending the inner nature of a person, circumstance or situation.

An insightful narcissist is someone who looks within as well as outside themselves. They ‘get’ the value and meaning of a person, circumstance or situation from their own perspective and have the ability (and inclination) to share their perspective as they invite others to do the same. That’s the healthy way to look into that pond and admire yourself.

July 2013 Tarotscope

thesunMercury, the great communicator, is still retrograde until July 20th. This retrograde is a particularly gnarly one. Plans and communications started ‘going south’ weeks before its official start. Emotions will run high, so please focus on being peaceful and calm. Do practice some form of meditation and relaxation on a daily basis. Since Mercury rules communication, transportation and contracts, when it’s retrograde, all manner of mistakes and misunderstandings can occur.  If you can, hold off on buying (or leasing) any big ticket items.  It’s also a good idea to triple check any and all plans you make.  This is an excellent time for introspection and research, as those things that are usually hidden from view, show themselves more easily during a Mercury Retrograde period.  Wait until Mercury goes direct before making any big decisions. It is still Summer, though, so remember to emulate the 5-year olds and—play, play, play.

Your message this month comes in the form of a quote or affirmation.

THE EMPEROR (March 21 – April 20) “It’s impossible,” said pride. “It’s risky,” said experience. “It’s pointless,” said reason. “Give it a try,” whispered the heart.” Anonymous

THE EMPRESS (April 21 – May 20) “In Switzerland I was educated in line with the basic premise: work, work, work. You are only a valuable human being if you work. This is utterly wrong. Half working, half dancing–that is the right mixture.”  Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

THE LOVERS (May 21 – June 20) “Life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint on it you can.” Danny Kaye

THE CHARIOT (June 21 – July 20) “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, concerned citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead

THE SUN (July 21 – August 22) “The truth shall set you free, but first it may piss you off.” Anonymous

THE HERMIT (August 23 – September 22) “There is nothing more notable in Socrates than that he found time, when he was an old man, to learn music and dancing, and thought it time well spent.” Michel de Montaigne

JUSTICE (September 23 – October 22) “There is only one real sin and that is to persuade oneself that the second best is anything but second best.” Doris Lessing

THE MAGICIAN (October 23 – November 21) “The finest emotion of which we are capable is the mystic emotion. Herein lies the germ of all art and all true science. Anyone to whom this feeling is alien, who is no longer capable of wonderment and lives in a state of fear, is a dead man. To know that what is impenetrable for us really exists and manifests itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty, whose gross forms alone are intelligible to our poor faculties—this knowledge, this feeling … that is the core of the true religious sentiment. In this sense, and in this sense alone, I rank myself among profoundly religious men.” Albert Einstein

THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE (November 22 – December 21) “It is only when we no longer compulsively need someone that we can have a real relationship with them.” Anthony Storr

THE WORLD (December 22 – January 19) “I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.” Jack London

THE STAR (January 20 – February 19) “This is the real secret of life—to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realize it is play.” Alan Watts

THE MOON (February 20 – March 20) “The formula for achieving a successful relationship is simple: you should treat all disasters as if they were trivialities but never treat a triviality as if it were a disaster.” Quentin Crisp

Mercury Retrograde Survival Guide

temperenceMercury, that wily planet of communication and patron god of merchants, writers and thieves will be shaking us up by committing its thrice yearly act of trickster’s mayhem– going retrograde on July 26th.  Mercury will be in the emotional sign of Cancer.  In addition to causing delays, misunderstandings and mix-ups galore, it will do so with lots of potential for emotional drama, so remember to check in with yourself and stay centered and grounded.

There are many who believe Mercury retrograde times bring into effect Murphy’s Law–“Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.” While that’s true in some cases, it also provides us with opportunities to go within and connect with our sources of inner truth.  It gives us the chance to become conscious of our true essence and learn how to position ourselves to our best advantage in all circumstances. Rather than Murphy’s Law, I find much more power in this admonition– “Be still and know.”

By going within and being one with your inner silence, you can access a level of wisdom, brilliance and awareness that will enlighten and empower you.

True, some things will definitely go awry. How you deal with them makes all of the difference. A few Mercury retrogrades ago, a friend and her mother were traveling abroad.  After they checked their bags at the airport, my friend paid attention to her intuition, went back to the ticket counter and insisted that she be allowed to check the airport identification tags on their luggage against the baggage claim tags they’d been given. Sure enough, she discovered that their bags had been mis-tagged and were scheduled to be sent to a destination different from theirs! (Although this type of mix-up happens too often on its own, with Mercury retrograde, it becomes an epidemic.)

My friend averted several other communication and travel disasters on that trip because she never forgot it was a retrograde Mercury running the show. She double and triple checked everything and was able to make all of her connections with her baggage in tow.

Mercury retrograde is also a great time for research and investigation because both of those activities require a person to delve deeply into something as opposed to reaching out for results and what is hidden or not obvious tends to show itself more easily during a Mercury Retrograde period.

Yes, sometimes things will go wrong, but if you’re alert, you’ll come through this potentially stressful time just fine. A few other things to keep in mind– if you can, hold off on buying (or leasing) any big ticket items.  This is NOT the time to buy a house, a car or make a big investment. If you must, though, please make sure there’s an ‘out’ clause in your contract. And always, wait until Mercury goes direct before making any big decisions.

How to Have it All– Money and the Good Life

temperence“If you want something new, be open to having it come from anywhere, anything, any person.”

An excerpt from my book, Secrets of a Psychic Counselor:

“All my life, I’ve wanted to have nice things: a beautiful car and a home, and the means to travel, too.   For the most part, they always seem just out of reach for me.  Sometimes I have a lot of money, and sometimes I struggle.  I need to find, and learn how to maintain a level of consistency for bringing in the kind of income I want.”

My client’s story was a familiar one. You’ve probably said something like that about yourself, too. Creating an abundant life is necessary if you want to live a comfortable life.  Abundance means more than just money; it’s also connected to self-value, belief systems and energy flow. I’m often asked to create courses of action that will help bring about a desired result for my clients.

I’m sharing a condensed version of the course of action I created for one of my clients here:

The ABUNDANCE BATH: take a total of six of these Abundance Baths within a 14 day period, just before bedtime.

 SUPPLIES:

3 Small Candles– 1 White, 1 Green, 1 Gold

Incense– whatever scent appeals to you

Green food coloring (once it’s in the bath, it won’t stain your skin)

 Sea Salt or Kosher Salt

 Bubble Bath

 Honey

Rose Oil or Rose Water or Lavender Oil or Lavender Water

Inspirational Music– whatever gentle music you like as long as long as it has no lyrics

Marianne Williamson’s Affirmation (sometimes attributed to Nelson Mandela):

“Our worst fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.  It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us.  We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?'”

Actually, who are you not to be?  You are a child of God; your playing small doesn’t serve the world.  There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us.  It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone– and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.  As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

DIRECTIONS:

Play your music throughout this process.  Keep the volume low enough to serve as background music and high enough for you to hear, without straining.

Light the candles and the incense, anytime between 35 minutes after the hour, and 5 minutes before the next hour.  (The minute hand is moving upward– bringing positive energy toward you.) Place them on a level surface in the bathroom– Green on the right, White in the middle, Gold on the left.

Read the affirmation, out loud or to yourself.

Prepare your Abundance Treatment Bath, as follows: To comfortably warm water, add Bubble Bath, ½ small bottle of Green food coloring, 3 Tablespoons of Honey, 1 Handful of Salt, 6 Drops of Rose or Lavender Oil or 3 Capfuls of Rose or Lavender Water.  Sit in the bath for at least fifteen minutes (longer if you like).

NOTE: If your skin has an allergic reaction to salt– use dried lavender, in place of salt.

While in the bath, close your eyes.  Take a series of three deep, gentle, rhythmic breaths– relaxing more and more with each breath.  At the end of the third deep breath– with your eyes still closed, begin breathing normally and visualize or imagine a large oval picture frame in front of you.

In the center of this large, oval frame– visualize or imagine yourself serenely seated on a throne, in an outdoor setting.  Behind you, is your home, your castle.  You notice that you’re dressed richly and beautifully.  Even though the crown on your head is heavy, you don’t feel the weight of it.  You are totally comfortable and at ease with yourself and your surroundings.

At your feet, to your left, is a pile of gold coins– a material symbol of your worth.  The energy radiating from your heart is also gold– it is a spiritual symbol of your worth.  See yourself pick up one of the gold coins, and hold it a few inches in front of your heart.

As you look down at the gold coin in your hands, and the gold energy radiating from your heart– you see, feel and know, with a new depth of willingness, acceptance, vulnerability and joy– that they are made of the same substance as you and everything in  life– the Creator’s unconditional, unlimited, healing love.  Really feel that kinship.  Revel in the experience of the limitless source of your Divine Birthright of abundance, prosperity and joy.

Breathe in this feeling of unconditional, unlimited love in the form of limitless abundance.  Visualize or imagine yourself using your abundance and wealth to have the lifestyle you want. Really feel the joy of it, as it gently, firmly moves through your being and caresses your heart.  Thank the Creator and thank yourself.

Take another series of three deep, gentle, rhythmic breaths– and open your eyes.

When you’re ready, get out of the tub and rinse it out. Then, snuff the candle flames out.

Go to bed and have a rich, royal rest.

NOTE: whenever the desire or need for money occurs, begin taking this series of Baths– all kinds of luck, blessings and cash will come your way.

“Seek and ye shall find, ask and it shall be given, knock and the door will be opened.”

The more detailed version of this Abundance Treatment and nine others are in my book, “Secrets of a Psychic Counselor.” It can be ordered by going to my website, www.SheilaaHite.com and clicking ‘Store’ on the menu bar near the top of the page.

June 2013 Tarotscope

thesunExtremes! The weather, belief systems, actions and attitudes. The best way to navigate these wild times is to stay centered and be open to acknowledging that as crazy as everything is, it is all moving in exactly the right manner. We, our world, and everything in it are changing, evolving and many of us are using the default system of resistance to anything new. The default system isn’t working—thank God! All of the energy being wasted can be put to positive, creative use as we move, evolve into our new way of being. Oh, and just to keep us paying attention, Mercury will be retrograde from June 26th until July 20th.

THE EMPEROR (March 21 – April 20) You, The Magician and The World are on the front lines of change, transformation and releasing the old to make way for the new. You didn’t get to vote on whether or not you wanted to participate—you were drafted. You have an option, though. You can resist and fight the coming change or you can band together and lead the charge as we all march into a future whose time has come. You’re more powerful than you think, so put your fierce energy into gear and release that which is no longer life/love affirming.

THE EMPRESS (April 21 – May 20) What are you craving these days? You’re in a very fertile space, now, growing something new and more reflective of who you really are. Like all expectant mothers, indulge those nurturing cravings and allow yourself to be ‘waited on’ by the world around you—you’re gestating important new works.

THE LOVERS (May 21 – June 20) Use the first twenty-six days of this month to get your ducks in a row. Mercury, your ruling planet, will go retrograde on June 26th, effectively throwing a monkey wrench into most of your plans. Use the three weeks of enforced ‘down time’ to reflect on your goals and create a strategy that you can use to bring your goals to successful completion once Mercury goes direct on July 20th.

THE CHARIOT (June 21 – July 20) This is a time to be daring. Not out in the world, though; within yourself is where you’ll benefit most from exercising emotional courage. A lot of ‘old’ will be coming up for you. Look it in the eyes and free yourself from it by acknowledging that the past is in the past. Allow that you have the right and the responsibility to live your life out loud and then—do it!

THE SUN (July 21 – August 22) As wild as it may seem, it’s time for you to lie low. You’ve been expending a lot of energy and you need to take time to recharge. Enjoy the lazy days of Summer by just being. Observe life and store up your energy for the next few months. The upcoming Fall season will be your time to rule—take it easy now and you’ll be ready for it.

THE HERMIT (August 23 – September 22) Your message is similar to The Lovers. Use the first twenty-six days of this month to get your ducks in a row. Mercury, your ruling planet, will go retrograde on June 26th, effectively making a mess of your neatly ordered plans. Use the three weeks of enforced ‘down time’ to reflect on your goals and create a strategy that you can use to bring your goals to successful completion once Mercury goes direct on July 20th.

JUSTICE (September 23 – October 22) Remember the old saying, “You’re known by the company you keep?” Well, the company is going to be pretty wild for a while and you’re going to get plenty of chances to quickly choose who you’re going to play with. This exercise of seeming recklessness will be good for you; it’ll help you learn to trust yourself as you cease the habit of unproductive vacillation.

THE MAGICIAN (October 23 – November 21) Your message is linked with The Emperor’s message this month– You, The Magician and The World are on the front lines of change, transformation and releasing the old to make way for the new. Do—keep in mind your advice from last month— you must become the power force you were meant to be, in your personal life as well as in your public life. You can’t hide your light under a bushel basket any longer. Get yourself a Life Coach and get on with fulfilling your destiny.

THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE (November 22 – December 21) OK. Just a few more weeks of ‘rolling along smoothly’ and you’ll be ready and able to call the tune you like and dance to it, as well. Be patient and make note of what you want to do, who you want to meet and where you want to go when this quiet time is over. That way, be it a parade or a party, you’ll be ready for it when it happens.

THE WORLD (December 22 – January 19) Your message is linked with The Emperor’s message this month– You, The Magician and The World are on the front lines of change, transformation and releasing the old to make way for the new. Do—keep in mind your advice from last month—Keep moving in the direction of your dreams—the Universe is your ally.

THE STAR (January 20 – February 19) Life is a roller coaster right now; just make sure you’re securely strapped in and enjoy the ride! In other words, these are interesting and unpredictable times; be interesting and unpredictable in them. Learn to live in the moment and approach life with your hands open—you never know what you’ll get and you won’t be stuck with something you don’t want or can’t use.

THE MOON (February 20 – March 20) Ahh—rest, think, dream—then, do and become! Your role models this month are the cast of characters in Lewis Carroll’s, ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.’ Spend a few minutes each day practicing perceiving life from the perspective of a main character and you’ll see your path clearly unfold before you. New people bearing gifts of wisdom will come into your life.

Independent Publishing of Tarot, Lenormand and Divination Decks – Part 2

temperenceIn my previous blog post, I wrote about the pros and cons of independently publishing your own books and card decks vs. contracting with a traditional publisher.

Both options are viable and promise their own type of satisfaction and both require your committing to a steep learning curb. There are projects that are suited to the independent publishing process and there are those that are better manifested via the traditional publishing route.

How you go about presenting your new ‘baby’ to the world will make a big difference in how much control you have over your projects future and your peace of mind.  Use this blog post as a guideline as you weigh your options and make your choice. Read more

Traditional vs. Independent Publishers of Books and Tarot Cards

temperencePart 1

You’ve got a great idea for a book or a deck of cards and you want to present it to the world.  The question most often asked at this point is, “do I travel the traditional publishing path or do I pull a ‘Christopher Columbus’ and go the independent publisher’s route?”

Both options are viable and promise their own type of satisfaction and both require your committing to a steep learning curb. There are projects that are suited to the independent publishing process and there are those that are better manifested via the traditional publishing route. Read more
