What’s an Eclipse and Why is it Important?

temperenceAn eclipse is an event that occurs when one planet is temporarily obscured from our view by the passing of another planet over it.

The two types of eclipses that affect us most here on Earth are Solar eclipses and Lunar eclipses.  A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes in front of the Sun and either partially or fully obscures (hides) it from our view.  A lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun passes in front of the Moon and partially or fully hides it from our view.    We just experienced a solar eclipse on the new Moon on May 9th. May 2013 Tarotscope

thesunAt last! For most of us north of the Equator, real, warm, leaf and flower budding Spring is finally here! Never mind that deadline—get up from your desk and go outside. Please smell the roses and revel in the sunlight and the warmth. This long Winter season has shown us that we do need to appreciate the emergence of life in all aspects of our lives.

THE EMPEROR (March 21 – April 20) Hold on to your hat! The fierce wind blowing in your direction is stirring up more than dust. It’s also unearthing previously hidden information that can help you in your quest to move up in the world. Take this precious intel and examine it carefully—there is something of great value for you.

THE EMPRESS (April 21 – May 20) This is a good time to ‘flirt’ with what has attracted your interest.  Notice that I wrote ‘what’ and not ‘who.’ Although leading with your heart is appealing to you, this is not a time to bullishly pursue romance. This is a time to get familiar with the different ways that you’re turned on by making your dreams a reality.  Use that energy to help you gain the insights and make the contacts you need for the successful outcome of your vision.

THE LOVERS (May 21 – June 20) Your methods of processing information and experiences are shifting to a more even paced, meticulous routine. You already have a voracious appetite for knowledge and personal interaction with others– now, sate that appetite by slowly going through and gleaning the really beneficial parts of the information and discard the rest. The results will pay off handsomely.

THE CHARIOT (June 21 – July 20) You’re changing. Although this is a good thing, it isn’t necessarily a comfortable experience. That’s OK. True change is rarely a consistent stroll through the park. This change is taking place over a period of time, so all you have to do is be mindful of it in your life and tag along with it. Someone from your past will offer to help you.

THE SUN (July 21 – August 22) Do you ever fantasize about wearing a crown, holding a scepter or sitting on a throne? If not—now’s the time to do so.  If so—please continue.  The energizing forces in the Universe are urging you to shine. Grab onto life and let the joy of it lead you in a spirited dance! It isn’t often that you get a license to live, love, laugh, so do take full advantage of this opportunity.

THE HERMIT (August 23 – September 22) Awake, Sleeping Beauty—the time is right for you to implement your plans in order to make your dreams come true. Allow yourself to move forward with the careful, measured grace that is your birthright. Be willing to take the lead and let others know how they can assist you. Remember to be a firm but generous leader and you’ll have the world eating out of your hand.

JUSTICE (September 23 – October 22) Remember last month’s advice about not surrendering to the status quo? Well, it still holds true for you, especially for the next few weeks. Taking and holding this stance will not necessarily be comfortable for you, but it will be rewarding.  You have great stamina and strength of purpose—it’s time to exercise those ‘muscles’ and use them to your advantage.

THE MAGICIAN (October 23 – November 21) Your ruling planet, Pluto, is the planet that insists on personal power and transformation.  Currently (and for a long time to come), it’s in the sign that rules order and manifestation. What does that mean for you? Only that you must become the power force you were meant to be, in your personal life as well as in your public life. You can’t hide your light under a bushel basket any longer. Get yourself a Life Coach and get on with fulfilling your destiny.

THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE (November 22 – December 21) Yes, you are the Wheel, but you don’t have to be the squeaky wheel. You’re meant to roll along smoothly and with the kind of grace that comes from being as blessed as you naturally are. As appealing as orchestrating the ‘big production’ can be for you, it’s time to stand down and allow the Cosmos to work its magic. By doing so, you’ll not only enjoy leading the parade, you’ll enjoy being the star of it as well.

THE WORLD (December 22 – January 19) What you’ve devoted your life to tells us who you are as a person. You are being acknowledged for your contributions and you’ve begun to see the results you’ve worked for.  It feels good, doesn’t it? Keep moving in the direction of your dreams—the Universe is your ally.

THE STAR (January 20 – February 19) You’re very close to breaking the code of a life puzzle that has long baffled you. Here’s a hint—the answer is very close to you—just follow the obvious. What you’ll discover will help you to liberate your dreams and empower your life. An influential person will befriend you and give you the help you need.

THE MOON (February 20 – March 20) Evolution. You are in the process of becoming more than you were in the past. Initially, evolution is an unconscious act.  But now, you’re at the point in becoming the new you, where you must consciously look at and think about what kind of person you want to become and how you will get there. Do this now, and then, put into action the steps that will take you there.

Readers Studio 2013 – The Tarot & Psychology Conference

temperenceWhat a rush!  I’m just beginning to come down from the Readers Studio 2013 experience.  I know it’ll take some time and I’m grateful for that.  I feel like Dorothy, clicking her heels together and repeating over and over, “I don’t want to go home!  I don’t want to go home!”

Instead of the usual three days, on Thursday, April 25th, we made history as we had the honor of participating in the very first Tarot and Psychology conference in the world.  In addition to the exhilaration of RS13, we were also treated to new and different ways of relating to the Tarot, our clients and ourselves.   Read more

What is a Spiritual Hedonist?

temperenceAn excerpt from my latest book, The Spiritual Hedonist– A Guide to the Divine Art and Practice of Living Joyfully

Webster’s dictionary definition of  (a) Spiritual—adj.—as, of or pertaining to sacred things or matters; pertaining to or consisting of spirit; pertaining to the spirit or soul; of or pertaining to the soul as the seat of moral or religious nature.  And (b) Hedonist—n.—a person who practices the doctrine that pleasure or happiness is the highest good.

A Spiritual Hedonist is someone who walks their own sacred path—a unique blend of what is personally sacred and meaningful to them and what is collectively sacred and meaningful to the world at large.  A Spiritual Hedonist is one who pursues their own ‘personal legend,’ and by doing so, discovers and reconnects with Divine Source, their own Divine birthright and the path of joy. Procrastination

temperenceTo paraphrase an old saying, “Why put off ‘til tomorrow what you can do today?”

I wish I knew, but I can’t answer that question, especially when it’s me whose participating in one of humankinds oldest pursuits—procrastination.  We all do it.  The more aware of us know better.  That certain feeling or inner voice that tries to intuitively nudge us into keeping our promise to do something that we know must, for whatever reason, be done. April 2013

thesunWe’ve moved through one fourth of the year already.  The winter storms are abating, the flowers are beginning to push their way into our conscious sight and we’re greeting each quasi-warm breeze with all of our hearts.  There’s no doubt about it, it’s Spring!  Celebrate the passing of the old by acknowledging yourselves for how far you’ve come in the last twelve months.  New life and the courage to live it summon us.

“To risk is to risk appearing the fool. To weep is to risk appearing sentimental. To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self. To place your ideas, your dreams before the crowd is to risk loss. To love is to risk not being loved in return. To live is to risk dying. To try at all is to risk failure. But to risk we must. Because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The man, the woman, who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

THE EMPEROR (March 21 – April 20) “God’s delays are not necessarily God’s denials.” ~Errol Van Mannen~  The delays and obstacles in your way aren’t a hindrance to your progress.  They’re actually an opportunity for you to take another look at how and why you’re making the decisions that you’ve been making.  They also give you a chance to change your mind if an idea has outlived its usefulness.  It’s important for you to go through this mandatory review phase.  You’ll discover an important detail you couldn’t have seen otherwise.

THE EMPRESS (April 21 – May 20) “Follow your bliss and the Universe will open doors for you where there were only walls.”~ Joseph Campbell~  You know that stubborn streak you’re always being accused of?  Well, give thanks for it because this time, by insisting on your own pace and path, you have allowed yourself to be standing at the intersection of Luck and Opportunity.  Good things will happen for you as long as you listen to what is true for you.  Help will come from the most unusual people and in the most unusual ways.

THE LOVERS (May 21 – June 20)  “Don’t let the noise of other people’s opinions drown out your inner voice.” ~Steve Jobs~  This is a time to indulge in exploration but don’t let that exploration lead you to any conclusions just yet.  This is a gathering time for you in which you take in all of the different aspects of the subject(s) that grab your attention.  Allow time and circumstances to do the sorting and sifting.  By letting the process work naturally, the real object of value will reveal itself to you on its own.

THE CHARIOT (June 21 – July 20)  “Take care to get what you like or you will be forced to like what you get.” ~George Bernard Shaw~  Going for it may not be the most comfortable thing you can do now, but it’s definitely the most beneficial action you can take at this time.  Keeping your true feelings buried and going with the consensus is an old, outmoded and unsatisfying pattern with you.  The Universe is insisting that you change that behavior and put yourself where you belong– in the driver’s seat.

THE SUN (July 21 – August 22) “The question is not what you look at, but what you see.” ~Henry David Thoreau~  You’ll do yourself a world of favors if you adopt the perspective of a happy 5-year old child during the next few weeks.  5-year olds can look at a cardboard box and see forts, dollhouses, castles and all manner of wondrous things.  Why?  Because they don’t have preconceived ideas about how or what life should be.  What you’ll discover is heart, soul and life enriching.

THE HERMIT (August 23 – September 22) It’s not selfish to look after ourselves—it’s essential.” ~Pearl S. Buck~  Last month, your ruling planet, Mercury, was retrograde and you were advised to devote more time and energy to yourself.  Though Mercury is now moving in a forward direction, that advice still holds true for you.  Treating yourself well and making that treatment a regular part of your life is the point of the exercise here.

JUSTICE (September 23 – October 22) “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” ~Mark Twain~  Sometimes you can’t create peace by moving to the center and surrendering to the status quo.  Sometimes you just have to stand your ground and bare your teeth.  This is one of those times.  Otherwise, the bullies who count on you seeking peaceful compromise, will run rough shod over you and all that you hold dear.

THE MAGICIAN (October 23 – November 21) “The pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; the optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” ~L. P. Jacks ~ It’s not like you to dwell on the ‘what ifs’ of a situation, so as appealing as it may be now, don’t give in to that temptation.  A kind of persistent insistence is the best way for you to operate at this time.  The clarity and confirmation you’re used to before you take action won’t come until after the dust dies down.  Yes, it is like balancing on a live wire, but you’re already a master at that, so everything will come out fine.

THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE (November 22 – December 21) “Never confuse someone else’s inability to do something with its inability to be done.” ~Steve Maraboli~  The nay-sayers are really screaming loudly now.  An era is at end and they don’t want to let go of the past, so they think if they deny the obvious long enough, it’ll go away.  You must ignore them and move toward the light of what you know is the future.  It may not make you popular with them but it will make you happy with yourself.

THE WORLD (December 22 – January 19) “Too late to turn back now.” ~Van Morrison~  Admit it—you love a good challenge.  And right now, challenge of one sort or another is all around you.  Although, the going is slow, what you’ve been working towards is in sight.  Others who share your vision will step forward to assist you.

THE STAR (January 20 – February 19)    “Those who see the invisible can do the impossible.” ~Pandurang Shastri Vaijnath Athavale~  Your guardian angel this month is the great philosopher and mathematician, Albert Einstein.  Don’t read his life story—study his quotes.  His wisdom and his ability to explain and apply practical concepts to what only he could see are the guides you need to break through into a new phase.  Go on now, the Universe is waiting.

THE MOON (February 20 – March 20)  “Fear is energy.  Energy is innocent; it’s what I do with it that determines the outcome.” ~Reverend Aldridge~  Truer words were never spoken.  Flip-flopping is a result of being afraid to take a stand because you’re afraid that you may be wrong.  Everyone is afraid at some point(s) in life.  It’s part of the human experience.  Let your gift of natural courage lead you and take a stand.  If you’re wrong, you’ll correct it—that’s what erasers are for.

When Your Back-Up Plan Backs Out

temperenceWe’ve all been there.  You have the passionately envisioned, perfectly planned event or project before you.  You’ve covered every aspect of actualizing it.  And because you’ve learned from your previous experiences, you even have a contingency or back-up plan just in case something doesn’t work out.

Secure in the knowledge that you’ve covered all of your bases, you don’t panic if Plan A runs into road blocks.  Sure, you’re disappointed but you know you can rely on the fact that you’ve got something just as strong up your sleeve—Plan B, your contingency or ‘safety school’ plan.  Read more

Sometimes, though, the unthinkable happens and you’re confronted with what you must do if your back-up plan falls through, too.

This is where the three ‘I’s’ come into play: Intuition, Inspiration, Intellect.  First, give yourself a moment (only a moment!) to feel the emotion that’s come up because of this giant boulder on your path.  Next, remember what the essence of the project or event is supposed to convey to your target audience.  Another way of putting essence is—what you want your intended audience to take away with them at the end of the experience.

Then, spend a few minutes letting your intuition ‘play’ with that stated essence.  All kinds of fantastic and fantasy ideas will come to mind.  As they do, allow them to lead you to ideas that you wouldn’t necessarily have considered before, but now are ideas that will inspire you to take the next step—a giant leap of faith as you commit to one of the incredible new insights that have sprung up from your very fertile sub-conscious.

Here is where your intellect comes in.  Even though you’re doing all of this on the fly, you still need to be conscious of how you’re going to implement your new plan so that everything falls into place and the miracle you need to happen happens.  Often, in these circumstances, you come up with something even better than your original idea.  Keep the planning simple, focusing on what’s most important in order to present your ideas in the best light.

And then—leap into that vast unknown and take the actions required to pull off the miracle you want and need to happen.  Amazingly enough, at least 90% of the time, the Universe will be there to assist you as you do.
